Nearby, Playa Ostional is the world’s second largest nesting site for the Olive Ridley turtle, known for their “arribadas” (arrival); an amazing mass nesting phenomenon which brings thousands of them onshore several times annually to lay their eggs. Troops of howler monkeys, known for traveling in families and communicating in deep, howling wails, pass through the nearby trees. Deer, coati-mundis, iguanas, raccoons, armadillos, wildcats, and even crocodiles inhabit the nearby forests and riverbeds. Over 850 species of birds have been identified throughout the country. Fishing is world class, with snook, dorado, tuna, snapper, grouper, wahoo, marlin, and sailfish in abundance year round.
